Session Description
A straightforward introduction to Washington's health data privacy law: what it is, why it exists alongside HIPAA rather than instead of it, and why organizations both inside and outside Washington are paying attention. The My Health My Data Act, in force since 2024, protects health data that sits outside HIPAA and lives in the places most privacy programs do not reach: public websites, marketing systems, intake forms, and analytics tools. Unlike HIPAA, it allows private lawsuits, and the first cases have already been filed. This awareness-level session applies whether you are a solo administrator or part of a large compliance team, and is designed to help you recognize the law and know what to ask.
Learning Objectives
After this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify the categories of health data regulated by Washington's My Health My Data Act and distinguish them from protected health information governed by HIPAA.
- Recognize the common places health-related data is collected outside the medical record, including public websites, intake and contact forms, and marketing systems.
- Identify the practical questions a healthcare organization should be asking about its own data practices in light of the law.
